About Karen

Karen (Coviello) Scian was born and raised in the beautiful city of Saskatoon.  Like many proud residents of Waterloo, she moved here to attend one of our world-class post-secondary institutions and ultimately chose Waterloo as the best place to work and raise a family.  She holds degrees in Kinesiology (B.Sc. Hons. Waterloo), Education (B.Ed. Western), and a Masters of Arts in Leadership (MA, RRU).
Karen is the Chair of the City of Waterloo’s Finance and Strategic Planning Committee of Council.  She represents Waterloo Council on the Audit Committee, Community Cash Grants, and the Waterloo Economic Development Committee.  In addition, Karen currently holds appointments on the following external community boards:  Waterloo North Hydro; Waterloo Public Library; The Clay & Glass Gallery; and Community Justice Initiatives (CJI). Previous board appointments include St. Mary’s General Hospital and The Button Factory.
Karen was first elected as your Waterloo City Councillor in 2006 and has spent the past six years working diligently for the citizens of the Westside and Waterloo.  Living in Laurelwood for over 15 years has given her the opportunity to watch the Westside evolve, creating a strong sense of what issues are relevant in the local  community.  Her children – Linnea and Peter – benefitted from the Laurelwood PS experience. Peter currently attends Sir John A Macdonald SS and Linnea is studying Business Law at Carleton University.
